As the sun was rising in Kampala, news filtered through The Cartels that the light had dimmed for one of our own, Mugwanya Isaac, alias Mugi D.

Isaac was a member of The Cartels; S.4A (2004-2008) and Kabalega House. He was an incredible person with a bright smile and an even brighter spirit. He had a way of making everyone feel seen and heard, and his kindness and compassion inspired us all.

In the words of Buyinza Joel “Mwacheb,” who studied with him from Primary 1 (1998): “Oh dear Isaac Mugwanya, friendly guy, easygoing, had good hair, remember him. Used to come with tinned beef from Bombo barracks. Oh dear, this is how I would end up seeing him one day…”

As we grew up together, Isaac was more than just a classmate – he was a friend, a confidant, and a partner in crime. We shared our dreams, our fears, and our joys, and his loss at just 31 years of age has certainly shaken the entire Cartels fraternity.

Though Isaac may be gone, we take comfort in knowing that he has reunited with our friends and fellow Cartels Tuhaise Peace and Ssegujja Leonard, who left us too soon. We can only imagine the laughter and adventures they’re sharing together again, free from pain and sorrow.

Isaac may be gone, but his memory will live on in our hearts. We will miss him dearly, but we take comfort in the time we had with him and the memories we created together. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love and friendship that will never fade.

To support bringing Isaac’s body back to Uganda for his ancestral farewell, please contribute to our GoFundMe campaign.

  1. This is the most awful thing that has befallen on us(Cartels), we cannot believe that it happened to MugiD, such a wonderful person. It’s unfair and horrible.

  2. Such an unfortunate loss, May his Soul Rest in Peace, and may the good Lord strengthen the family and friends in this trying time!
